This client had a pretty closed off home. Her primary objective was to expand her kitchen, make it more spacious and functional for her family. She currently has a powder room tucked next to her staircase separating the dining room and kitchen. The location of the powder room limits the flow of the home and the size of her kitchen.
By relocating the powder room off to the side by the garage entry way, where there is currently a large laundry room with plenty of unused space; and replacing the wall between the dining room and kitchen with a support beam (load bearing) really opens up the space and allows for maximizing the space of the kitchen and dining room. The original layout had a tiny island (not for seating but mainly storage and food prepping). With the new layout, the kitchen now has space for a large peninsula adding more prep space and seating which makes in-kitchen dining, entertaining and conversing a lot easier.
This client is a big fan of Joanna Gaines from HGTV, so we introduced a lot of the modern farmhouse elements to the design of her kitchen. We added 8″ ship lap to the entire back wall running from the kitchen to the family room. We kept everything natural with white cabinets, dark countertop and added some wood elements, industrial lighting and hardware to complete the modern farmhouse look.
