Home Office Ideas In A Small Home

Multi purpose room: dining table turned into office desk.

Working from home has never been this common whether it is hybrid or full-time and often both parties work from home at the same time. With my hubby and I using our home as our office I realized that creating 2 functional office spaces in my small home was a challenge I had to tackle. Not only I had limited space to work with, but I also had to factor in that people might be around while we do important work and have little privacy. To make life and work easier I am going to share some great home office options with you in this post. It might be a place that is not utilized yet, or one that can be multi-purpose.

Home Office Ideas In a Small Home

  1. Staircase Landing Office. This is a space that is often under utilized. You can quickly set-up your desk and office supplies and find space away from others. There might be a bit more traffic at times, but you are usually away from distraction.
  2. A Living Room Desk Shelf is a clever way to set up your home office in just about any room. You can decorate the shelves to compliment the room design or organize your office supplies so they are easily accessible.  It saves a huge amount of space while gives you the space you need to work from the comfort of your home.
  3. Behind the Sofa Desk: this is such a useful piece of real estate within your home. It can be simply just styled nicely but by adding a chair (it can be stored away from it while not used) you just gained valuable office space. Use baskets and bins for storing your office essentials that will also match your decor.
  4. Cloffice: The Closet Office is the ultimate option when you need privacy, but also need the room to be multi-purpose. There are many designs available, you just have to find the one that meets your needs the best. I turned our spare bedroom into a guest room-nursery-office and it works great for us.

An other multi-purpose room I created is the kid’s playroom. I felt like this space could be so much more.  I added a study area for them side by side with cabinets to the ceiling, which provides me plenty of space to store all the toys and school supplies. To give them a special place for reading (my oldest LOVES to read) I turned the empty corner by the windows into a library.

Limitless Options

Home office location options are limitless even in a small home. Alcoves where you can’t fit a TV or put in a wardrobe can support your work surface. Under stairs, large landings and hallways are usually underutilized areas of a home that can make an excellent office space.

Whenever you are limited on space it is key to plan your layout carefully. Once you selected the ideal location, pick furniture that is optimal in size and allows you to create storage for your work materials. Add as many shelves as possible above the desk and stackable storage bins and baskets if needed. You can get also creative with your storage. Multi-purpose furniture such as a storage ottoman is a great space-saving option also.
