One of my favorite rooms in the house is my daughter’s bedroom. Don’t get me wrong, I loved designing every inch of our new home, but there is something special about this one. Partly because she used to stay in the “multipurpose room” in the old house and I wanted to give my little girl her very own space to enjoy. It also turned out to be such a cute and girly space, which was a fun process to design. She made some requests of course and I tried to accommodate them wherever I could.
Paint makes a major difference. She is a girly girl and one of her requests was a pink or purple room. Well, the room is not quite pink or purple, but I selected a shade of mauve that she approved. I sampled several colors until I finally got the color right and I have to say, it’s perfect! It definitely sets the vibe I was going for. A little tip: if you feel like you found your color, but are not a 100% sold on the lightness or darkness of it, it can be modified. I ended up with Mystére by Behr at 40% lighter.
I knew from the very beginning that I wanted her to have a unique bed, one she will not want to leave in the middle of the night lol. We were scrolling through all the options and this house bed jumped right at us. It is such a fun bed that you can decorate with lights and flowers to make it even more fun and unique. In her room I decided to put it against the wall, because of the size and the layout of the space. Hers is a full size one and it comes with a trundle as well, great for sleepovers. And in case you are wondering, did it stop her from coming to my bed/ Absolutely NOT! But it still is the sweetest room.
Note: artwork from one of my favorite local artist, Kesia Finley.
The chandelier I picked out fits the theme perfectly. It is a globe chandelier which gave the room a more whimsical feel, exactly what I was going for. While you are shopping around consider the amount of light you will be getting, not only the style. My daughter loves this light as it reminds her of balloons.
To create a focal point and a more custom look I added floral wallpaper and wood panelling on the wall. It worked very really since the bed is pushed into the corner and these treatments give the wall a “pop”. Wallpaper is a great way to bring in personality into a boho girl’s bedroom. I chose this wallpaper as it compliments the wall color perfectly. I put wall paneling on both ends of the wall paper to frame the bed and to add more visual interest to the space.
Wallpaper framed out with wood panels.
I am a huge fan of window treatments. They not only provide privacy, but will “dress up” your windows and allow you to express your style. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. 1: When you hang your curtains make sure they are hung high. It will draw the eyes up which will make the room look bigger. 2: Hang them wide, so windows will appear larger and your room looks brighter. 3: Get the correct length: curtains should barely touch the floor. I decided to go with a neutral drape with a subtle plaid patten to accentuate all the other details in the room, such as the house bed.
I love rugs! A great rug can tie the entire decor together and helps define the space. To pick the right size it should go a little further than half way under the bed and have several feet around the bed to frame it nicely. The rug I decided to go with is neutral to complement the wall color. It goes perfectly with the drapes I used and helps to create a cozy room.
Creating a boho mauve girl’s bedroom with a house bed was such a creative process. You can play around with all the decor pieces to create a theme and to reflect your little girl’s personality.
